Shaw Cross Sharks 8 Leigh Miners Rangers 44
Published on February 07, 2010Email To Friend    Print Version

Four tries from Ryan Smith helped Miners past a spirited Shaw Cross in the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

After the frustrations of the previous weekend Miners were grateful for the game-time and a result they had to work hard for to earn a shootout with Hull Dockers for the right to face the professional sides in round three. Whilst the freezing conditions that had put paid to hopes of the game being played seven days earlier had lifted, the Grange Road pitch was a real quagmire that bogged down both teams at times. Miners were without Simon Warhurst and Liam Coleman from the team that had travelled in vain the week before, Gary Gittens and Craig Connor stepping in from the seconds, the latter for his first team debut. The Sharks, struggling in Division Two of the Conference, played almost the first hour with just thirteen men, a situation which coach Iain McCabe afterwards admitted had come close to forcing his resignation, but with assistant coach Ashley Fothergill stepping into the centres and prop Kevin Dickens catching the eye on his debut the home side produced an heroic display to match Miners for over half the game.

Miners were camped in Shaw Cross territory for much of the game, but it took ten minutes for them to breach the home defence when Scott O'Brien proved too elusive for two defenders to score, Jonny Youds with the conversion. But the Sharks were playing with plenty of heart and Fothergill produced a fine pass deep in his own twenty to send fullback Pat Foulstone sprinting clear for a fine try, Zak Johnson with the conversion to put the home side back on terms. Miners were struggling to make much headway through the primeval ta-pit of a pitch and the tigerish defence until two tries in three minutes before the break had them on top, first when a set move from a scrum on halfway saw Mark Jones storm down the left wing, and although Foulstone managed to check his progress near the line Smith was in support to score his first, Youds goaling, then some more pressure ended with John Woods finding the gap and sending Youds in for another six-pointer. Right on half time the Sharks reduced arrears when Dickens landed a booming penalty from long-range to make the score 18-8.

Heartened by their efforts the Sharks started the second half aggressively, enjoying a ten minute purple patch when they dominated territory and possession, aided by some errant Miners' handling, but they couldn't force a way through the visiting defence. The pressure was relieved in somewhat fortuitous fashion, the garrulous Foulstone spilling O'Brien's clearing kick inside his own half and Smith hacking the loose ball on to score under the posts. Youds goaling. From then on the fitness and strength of the Premier Division side told as tries followed at regular intervals, some sparkling rugby down the right involving Leon Brennan, Kieran Dainty, O'Brien and Smith ending with the scrum-half completing his hat-trick and he had a fourth to his name just minutes later. some more flowing rugby with Brennan picking up O'Brien's kick and sending Smith in for another score. Woods grabbed a solo try as he accelerated through a gap from a scrum on half way and on full-time O'Brien wriggled in for his second and the forty points.
